Project Risk Management

Course Description

This course introduces the project manager to the importance of including the time to build risk analysis and management approaches into every project plan. After completing this course, participants will be able to:
Define project risk.

  • Identify and mitigate to most common forms of project failure.
  • Develop practical approaches for instilling risk management into project plans.
  • Sell risk approaches to management to avoid unrealistic budget and schedule expectations.
  • Articulate and defend appropriate risk buffers in a project plan.

Identify sources of project risk through personal experience, group process and other sources of information.
Determine the impact of potential sources of project failure.
Assign a measurable probability to the sources of risk.
Develop procedures for assigning priorities to select those risks that require attention.
Create risk contingency plans to avoid or reduce those risks that require additional attention.
Create risk mitigation techniques for the project schedule and budget.
Build procedures and methods that can be used in a consistent fashion for your organisation’s project culture.
Gain management approval for tolerancing project plans for risk.

Course Objectives

This course is suitable for anyone wishing to exercise greater understanding and control of risk and how to identify and effectively manage Risk in the projects they are responsible for.

Pre-Requisites

A basic knowledge of Project Management techniques is useful but not essential. Familiarity with Microsoft Project is also useful but not mandatory.

Identifying the symptoms of risk.
Determining the impact of potential sources of project failure.
Assigning a measurable probability to the sources of risk.
Developing procedures for assigning priorities to select those risks that require attention.
Assigning risks to owners and making them responsible for monitoring and managing risks.
Creating risk contingency plans to avoid or reduce those risks that require additional attention.
Creating risk mitigation techniques for the project schedule and budget.
Building procedures and methods that can be used in a consistent fashion in your organisation’s project culture.
Monitoring and maintaining risk plans across the project lifecycle.
Gaining management approval for tolerancing project plans for risk.
