The PRINCE2 methodology is proving to be a popular approach for organisations to formalise their approach to managing projects. The methodology does not guarantee success but observing and applying it with a degree of intelligence can dramatically reduce the chances of failure.

Developed by the CCTA (Central Computing and Telecommunications Agency) a UK public sector body the PRINCE (PRojects In a Controlled Enviironment) methodology was developed following a study into IT project failure in the public sector. Their initial findings indicated that there were no guidelines as to how to go about planning and managing a project and as a consequence there were widely differing approaches being employed with similarly varying degrees of success. It was also observed that a lot of Project Managers promoted to the position spent a good deal of time devising their own approach to trying to manage projects, in the majority of cases the individuals in question did the best job possible but this approach resulted in duplicated effort and differing standards which again impacted on project success.

Acquiring a PRINCE2 accreditation can be a useful asset in establising your credentials as a Project Manager.
